The global security industry is a diverse group of people with a shared vision to safeguard people, property, and information from those that wish us harm.
The aim of this security practitioner’s ‘toolbox’ is to share the lifelong learnings of Frank Cannon, the Founding Director and Principal Consultant of Cannon Asset Protection (CAP) Limited.
Through communicating The CAP Way, Frank sets out his vision to help others, in and outside of the security industry, to deliver on their moral obligation to protect others. It is not meant to be all-encompassing and does not profess to provide the total solution to all adversarial risk. There are many ways to reduce the likelihood and consequence of bad people doing bad things, but this is part of the story.
Frank tends to keep things ‘simple’ and avoids using security industry jargon, acronyms, or fabricated terminology. His experience has told him that common-sense, cost-efficient, and proportionate security controls are the simplest measures to ‘sell’ to those that need them.
Secure behaviours are often the best form of defence and —if you agree that people break security rules for one of three reasons— then improving security awareness across the organisation will best serve to reduce the likelihood and impact of all three reasons:
1. Ignorant to the existence of the rule.
2. Complacency bought about through distraction.
3. Knowingly with malicious intent.
Richard Branson once said about organisational culture, “Create the kind of workplace and company culture that will attract great talent. If you hire brilliant people, they will make work feel more like play”.
This ‘toolbox’ aims to guide people to identify, understand, and mitigate people-initiated risk —adversarial risk— and does not consider force majeure, natural disasters, weather events, or pandemics. It focusses on occurrences involving motivated and capable people that set out to intentionally do bad things.
